Well, it’s begun. Last night was the first (of many, I’m afraid) time I looked at Max’s math homework and had no idea how to do it.
“We’re working on re-grouping,” he told me.
“What is that?” I asked.
His eyebrows raised. “You don’t know what re-grouping is?” He seemed slightly embarrassed. For me, of course.
“I know what the word means,” I said. “I know how to re-group. I just don’t know how to do it mathematically.”
Sadly, it took Josh looking it up on Wikipedia to figure out that re-grouping basically means to move a remaining number from one column of numbers to another. So, it means to ‘carry the one’. Which is what they called it back in my day. You know, when Pluto was still a planet.
